“Glacial Lake Threatens Pemberton Area”

Residents in the area northeast of Pemberton, British Columbia, are on high alert as the Place Glacier continues to melt, creating a glacial lake that poses a threat of bursting or overflowing. Rick King, one of the residents, described the unnerving sound of the glacial water rushing toward his property. The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District has warned that an evacuation order will be issued once the lake reaches a depth of 30 meters.

Concerns are mounting as this marks the third consecutive year that the glacial lake outburst is anticipated. Residents have been on evacuation alert since June 7. Research scientist Jeff Crompton stated the challenge in predicting the exact timing of the potential outburst.

Last year, neighboring properties experienced flooding from the rising creek-bed caused by sediment, trees, and rocks from the glacial outburst. Residents fear a repeat of the flooding, with worries that this year could be more severe. Measures have been taken to strengthen embankments to direct the flow away from certain areas, but residents like Don Coggins and Rick King are calling for more proactive measures to prevent flooding, such as dredging Poole Creek and widening culverts.

Despite proposals to mitigate the situation, such as using explosives to fracture the glacier, funding for such measures has not been secured due to concerns about potential geotechnical impacts. Residents are feeling helpless as restrictions prevent them from taking preventive actions. The regional board chair, Jen Ford, is advocating for impacted residents to be included in the Disaster Financial Assistance Program.

The rapidly changing conditions at Place Glacier serve as a warning for other glacier-related risks in the region. The situation is being described as a “canary in the coal mine” by Ford, highlighting the need for proactive measures and support for vulnerable communities facing similar threats.
