“Ontario Struggles with Road Salt Shortage Amid Harsh Winter”

Winter is ongoing, but Ontario is currently experiencing a shortage of road salt, leading some cities to adjust their usage or ration supplies. The accelerated onset of winter and severe weather conditions have caused cities to deplete their salt reserves rapidly.

Guelph typically receives about 40 millimetres of rain and 10 centimetres of snow in November and December. However, this year has seen above-average precipitation levels, with 104 millimetres of rain and 30 centimetres of snow during the same period.

To stretch their salt reserves, cities are resorting to using more sand or a combination of sand and road salt. The Goderich Salt Mine in Perth County is facing delays in salt deliveries, prompting adjustments in de-icing operations.

The City of Kitchener has also encountered lower-than-anticipated salt supply this winter and is implementing strategies to conserve salt, including weather monitoring and enhanced plowing efforts before salting or sanding. Despite the scarcity, the city assures it has sufficient salt for future requirements.

The high demand for road salt has overwhelmed suppliers, necessitating prioritization of municipal orders. Some private contractors have been compelled to procure salt from other provinces, such as Quebec, due to shortages in Ontario.

The Goderich Salt Mine, a major salt producer operating at full capacity, is struggling to meet the spike in demand. The mine’s crews are working tirelessly to keep up with the requirements, underscoring the challenges posed by concentrated demand over a short period.

Wetter conditions have prevailed across much of southern Ontario, with above-average snowfall reported in southwestern regions. Environment Canada attributes this trend to a warmer atmosphere capable of retaining more moisture, leading to increased precipitation events.

Despite the challenges posed by the salt shortage, cities and suppliers are working diligently to manage the situation and ensure road safety during the winter months.
