As the U.S. President Donald Trump considers imposing new 50 percent tariffs on various Canadian goods, the president of a union representing steelworkers in Hamilton expresses concern about the impact on the industry. Ron Wells, the president of United Steelworkers (USW) Local 1005, mentioned that the existing tariffs have already negatively affected Canadian steel sales to the U.S., potentially leading to increased living costs and a widespread impact on businesses that rely on steel supplies.
Although 50 percent tariffs on steel have been in effect since last year, the specific details of Trump’s recent announcement regarding a further increase in tariffs for steel, automobiles, and auto parts starting January 1 remain unclear. Hamilton, known for housing two major steel producers in Canada, ArcelorMittal Dofasco and Stelco, along with numerous fabricators, is particularly vulnerable to these trade tensions.
Wells highlighted that business has slowed down significantly since the initial tariffs were imposed, affecting around 620 workers at Stelco. Additionally, recent U.S. tariffs on approximately $28 billion worth of Canadian goods have already taken effect, following unsuccessful trade negotiations between the two countries. Prime Minister Carney has indicated that Canada will retaliate with tariffs starting on September 8.
In response to the escalating trade situation, Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath expressed concerns about the uncertainty faced by the city, emphasizing the need for strong support from federal and provincial partners to assist local businesses in navigating these challenges. Greg Dunnett, CEO of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, echoed these sentiments, stating that the city is experiencing significant negative impacts and requires immediate support and investments.
Cleveland-Cliffs, the company that acquired Stelco in July 2024, was approached for comments on the effects of the tariffs on their Canadian operations but did not respond. During a recent earnings call, Cleveland-Cliffs CEO Lourenco Goncalves expressed concerns about the future competitiveness of their operations in Hamilton without additional measures to safeguard fair trade.
Amid these uncertainties, various stakeholders in the steel industry, including union leaders and government officials, are advocating for measures to protect jobs and industries affected by the tariffs. Premier Doug Ford of Ontario has reaffirmed his support for Canadian workers and industries, pledging to provide assistance through programs like the Protect Ontario Financing Program and advocating for restrictions on foreign steel imports.
