A Ukrainian family residing in Halifax is calling for clarity from the Canadian government regarding the extensive delays faced by thousands of Ukrainian immigrants in processing their permanent residency applications. Oleh Zadoretskyy and his family, who arrived in Canada under the humanitarian and compassionate stream amid the war, were shocked to learn about the potential wait time exceeding 50 years for their applications to be processed.
Initially skeptical, Zadoretskyy and his community members were taken aback upon confirming the extended processing times through an access-to-information request. Expressing feelings of despair and disbelief, Zadoretskyy questioned the sustainability of a 55-year waiting period, emphasizing the impracticality of such lengthy delays.
Having relocated to Halifax from Ukraine via Latvia, Zadoretskyy and his family, including his wife and two daughters, sought safety and stability in Canada. As they await immigration updates, concerns arise over the impending expiry of their daughters’ visitor permits, hindering their access to essential services like healthcare and education.
Despite efforts to renew permits and navigate the processing delays, Zadoretskyy and other affected individuals are left in uncertain limbo. In response to the mounting concerns, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada acknowledged the backlog issue, attributing the lengthy processing times to the overwhelming number of Ukrainian applications exceeding available spots in the immigration levels plan.
