“Churches in St. John’s Struggle with Soaring Oil Bills”

After facing elevated fuel costs for a prolonged period, several churches in St. John’s are encountering challenges in managing exorbitant oil bills required to heat their sizable premises, causing financial strain and limiting available solutions.

Jonathan Stevenson, board chair of Gower Street United Church, revealed that this year’s oil expenses are approximately 40 percent higher than anticipated, leading to a direct impact on the budget. Stevenson expressed the difficulty in finding viable alternatives, stating that the church has exhausted all possibilities and even contemplated renting out the sanctuary to alleviate the financial burden.

Similarly, at St. Teresa’s Parish, Pastor Ciro Perez highlighted a significant increase of around $7,000 in oil expenditures compared to the previous year, emphasizing the financial strain on the church. Perez mentioned efforts to reduce costs and encourage increased donations due to the substantial space requiring a considerable amount of oil for heating.

Considering a transition to electric heating, St. Teresa’s expressed interest in the change but acknowledged the financial impediment of the $600,000 price tag associated with the conversion.

Meanwhile, the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist has embarked on a major project to switch to electric heating, necessitating an investment of approximately one million dollars. The Very Reverend Roger Whalen emphasized the necessity of refurbishing the aging system or opting for the electric conversion due to the unavailability of oil rebate programs, which the church missed out on.

Whalen disclosed the challenges posed by volatile oil prices, citing instances where bills surged by $30,000 annually, with the typical expenditure hovering around $70,000. Although the cathedral switched to a lower-grade oil last year, Whalen expressed anticipation for a more stable financial outlook post the transition to electric heating.

Contrastingly, Gower Street United Church has no immediate plans for conversion, as Stevenson foresees a challenging period ahead due to unpredictable oil price fluctuations disrupting financial planning.

As the churches navigate these financial hurdles, uncertainties around oil costs loom large, emphasizing the need for strategic financial management amidst the ongoing market instabilities.
