“Endangered Species Seek Refuge in Greenbelt, Up 70%”

A recent report reveals a significant increase of nearly 70% in the number of endangered species seeking refuge in the Greenbelt over the past two decades. Ontario Nature, an environmental charity, conducted the study by analyzing government data from 2004 before the establishment of the protected area. The report shows that the count of vulnerable species in the Greenbelt has risen from 72 to 121.

The Greenbelt, spanning over 800,000 hectares around the Greater Golden Horseshoe, serves as a critical ecological zone designated in 2005 to safeguard habitats and restrict development. The report highlights that the 121 at-risk species in the Greenbelt represent 42% of the province’s total endangered species, including creatures like the redside dace fish and the Jefferson salamander facing challenges due to habitat loss and pollution impacts.

Tony Morris, the conservation policy and campaigns director at Ontario Nature, emphasized the mounting significance of the Greenbelt for preserving vital ecosystems, especially in southern Ontario. The report also outlines eight recommendations to fortify the protected area, advocating for expanding Greenbelt boundaries, strengthening protections for endangered species, and revitalizing degraded habitats.

However, the mandatory review of the Greenbelt legislation, which is overdue by more than a year and a half, has been delayed since Premier Doug Ford’s snap election in January 2025. The government’s Greenbelt council, responsible for advising on land use planning within the zone, remains inactive as the last member’s term lapsed last summer without new appointments for the review.

Despite commitments to conduct the review, Municipal Affairs Minister Rob Flack has not provided specific details, leaving stakeholders concerned about the future of the Greenbelt. The government’s previous controversial plan to remove land from the protected area for development faced public backlash, forcing a reversal and ongoing investigations by the RCMP.

Opposition leaders and environmentalists are urging the government to expedite the review process and guarantee the preservation of Greenbelt lands. The delay in the mandatory review has prompted advocacy groups like Ontario Nature to fill the void left by governmental inaction, emphasizing the critical need for effective conservation measures in the face of escalating environmental threats.
