“Autoimmune Brain Diseases Misdiagnosed as Mental Disorders”

A new group of autoimmune diseases impacting the brain is prompting psychiatrists to reassess certain diagnoses. Dr. Chris Hahn, a neurologist at the University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine, highlights that autoimmune encephalitis, though uncommon, can manifest with psychiatric symptoms leading to potential misdiagnosis of a mental disorder.

Nora Scott from High River, Alberta, initially experienced sleep difficulties and constant mental activity, eventually necessitating a break from her job due to behavioral changes. Her partner, Chris Johnson, noticed her engaging in atypical behaviors like excessive cleaning and extravagant spending, resembling characteristics of psychosis.

After a 30-day psychiatric ward admission, Scott was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. However, it took four more years and a subsequent hospitalization for her to be correctly identified with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis, an autoimmune condition affecting the brain’s mood-regulating areas.

Dr. Hahn emphasizes the challenges in diagnosing autoimmune encephalitis, which can mimic mental disorders and be life-threatening if untreated. Despite the rarity of misdiagnosis, efforts have been made to establish national guidelines for early identification.

Dr. Jai Shah from McGill University stresses the importance of understanding various causes of psychosis, including autoimmune origins, to prevent stigma associated with mental health conditions. He emphasizes the need for proper diagnosis and treatment for individuals to lead fulfilling lives, regardless of the underlying condition.

The journey of Nora Scott underscores the significance of accurate diagnosis and highlights the dedication of healthcare professionals in ensuring patient well-being.
