“Former Homeless Individuals Share Stories of Transformation”

Kevin Labbé, a 34-year-old individual at La Dauphine’s community organization and shelter in Quebec City, shares his journey of ending up homeless due to loneliness and bullying leading to substance abuse. Despite being a former good student, Labbé’s lack of support caused him to drop out of school. Introduced to La Dauphine by a friend, Labbé found solace in the center, where staff like Noémie Guay provide a sense of security that many clients lacked in their childhood.

La Dauphine caters to a diverse range of clients with issues such as substance use, mental health concerns, emotional regulation difficulties, and isolation. Operating for over 30 years, the organization aims to prevent youth homelessness by offering vital support to those at risk.

David Hunlede’s success story stands out as he recently transitioned from being homeless to securing his own apartment and preparing to embark on a university journey. La Dauphine’s assistance, including essentials like clothing, food, and shelter, played a pivotal role in Hunlede’s transformation. He now volunteers at the center, appreciative of the support he has received.

The youth program, Jeunes en action Dauphine (JAD), has been instrumental in reintegrating young individuals into education or the workforce. La Dauphine also provides high school courses to assist students who did not complete their education through traditional schooling. Additionally, clients benefit from nourishing meals, prepared by former client turned head cook Jean-Luc Paquin, ensuring they receive proper sustenance.

For Labbé, ongoing support from La Dauphine helps him combat his drug addiction. His goal is to establish a life beyond the center and wake up in a place he can call his own. Despite facing personal struggles, Labbé remains grateful for the guidance and hopes to achieve independence and stability outside the confines of La Dauphine’s shelter.
