“Peguis First Nation nears flood protection completion”

A hydrologist assisting Peguis First Nation in Manitoba’s Interlake region anticipates completing flood protection measures around the community by Wednesday. Ian Halket, who has been collaborating with the First Nation on preparations for the upcoming spring runoff, expressed confidence in the community’s readiness to manage the expected flooding in the near future.

As of Tuesday, Halket mentioned that the protective work is nearing completion, with only a few final tasks remaining. The provincial authorities have supplied over half a million sandbags and 11,000 larger sandbags to support Peguis, while neighboring Fisher River Cree Nation has received more than 36,000 sandbags and 1,000 larger ones.

Doug Thomas, the director of communications for Peguis First Nation, reported that 115 homes identified as most vulnerable have been safeguarded, with crews making finishing touches on the dikes surrounding approximately 10 homes. Thomas praised the team for their exceptional coordination, stating that the community has never been better prepared.

Halket highlighted that approximately 85 maintenance holes and a significant portion of the community’s infrastructure have been secured. Efforts were ongoing on Tuesday to construct a final dike around the public works yard.

Peguis announced plans on Monday to evacuate “Priority 1” residents immediately, including individuals with disabilities, diabetes, pregnant women, and those requiring additional assistance. Despite identifying 32 individuals for preemptive evacuation on Tuesday, only six have opted to leave voluntarily.
