“Avalanche Victims’ Recovery Operation Successfully Concluded”

Crews have successfully retrieved the remains of nine individuals who lost their lives in an avalanche in California four days ago, as confirmed by authorities on Saturday. The challenging recovery operation, impacted by heavy snowfall, has come to a conclusion.

Search teams managed to locate and retrieve the bodies of eight victims and also found one individual who had been missing and presumed deceased following the avalanche on Castle Peak near Lake Tahoe earlier in the week. The ninth individual, who was unaccounted for, was discovered in close proximity to the other victims but was obscured by white-out conditions during the initial discovery of the group.

The recovery mission had to be halted for a few days due to the severe snowfall and the looming threat of further avalanches. On Saturday morning, helicopters from the California National Guard and California Highway Patrol successfully lifted the bodies from the mountain using hoists and transferred them to nearby snowcats, specialized trucks for snow transportation.

A day prior, officials had mentioned using water to disintegrate the snow in the area for avalanche mitigation purposes. This technique is aimed at intentionally triggering unstable snowpack to minimize risks for rescue teams during their operations.

The extensive mitigation and search operations involved various entities such as California Highway Patrol air operations, Nevada County Sheriff’s search and rescue teams, Tahoe Nordic search and rescue teams, Pacific Gas & Electric, the Sierra Avalanche Center, and other organizations.
