“Comox Valley Community Takes Action Against Invasive Bullfrogs”

A community effort is underway in the Comox Valley on central Vancouver Island to eliminate invasive American bullfrogs from local lakes and water bodies. The Tsolum River Restoration Society is launching workshops to assist residents in setting up tadpole traps, citing the threat these large bullfrogs pose to native species.

American bullfrogs, known for their size compared to other frogs in B.C., have a diverse diet that includes frogs, salamanders, insects, and small mammals. One local resident regularly inspects tadpole traps at Maple Lake, just north of Cumberland, to protect the area’s fragile ecosystems.

Bruce Moffat, a volunteer with the society, expressed a change in perspective after discovering a significant population of bullfrog tadpoles in Maple Lake. He emphasized the urgent need to address the issue to prevent the decimation of local wildlife.

Moffat highlighted the potential devastation that a thriving bullfrog population could cause to amphibians, fish, and insects, ultimately affecting birds and larger species. The Invasive Species Council of B.C. (ISCBC) warned that American bullfrogs pose a significant risk to vulnerable species like the northern red-legged frog and western painted turtle.

Gail Wallin, the executive director of ISCBC, stressed the importance of controlling bullfrog populations and documenting their impact. While eradicating them completely may be challenging, efforts to manage their numbers are crucial. Wallin recommended safe trapping and euthanizing methods to mitigate the threat they pose.

The Tsolum River Restoration Society is hosting workshops in the Comox Valley to educate residents on constructing tadpole traps. The aim is to empower the community to combat the invasive species and safeguard local biodiversity. Participants will learn to identify bullfrog tadpoles by their distinct features, such as a cream-colored belly and green speckling.

Removing American bullfrogs is part of a comprehensive strategy to protect native species in the region. The society has developed educational materials, including a chart to aid residents in identifying bullfrog tadpoles accurately. Ongoing community efforts are essential to managing bullfrog populations and preserving the local ecosystem.
