“Canada Triumphs in Dubai, Secures Promotion to SVNS 2 Series”

The Canadian men’s rugby sevens team achieved success in Dubai by winning the HSBC SVNS Division 3 challenger event, marking their progress up the rankings. They faced a tough challenge against Hong Kong in the semifinals but managed to secure a spot in the HSBC SVNS 2 series by winning the match. In a thrilling game, Canada initially took the lead with a try from Elias Hancock, maintaining a 7-5 advantage at halftime. Despite Hong Kong briefly pulling ahead 19-14 in the second half, Canada fought back, with Adam Doane scoring a crucial try to level the score at 19-19. In extra time, Thomas Isherwood’s try sealed a 24-19 victory for the Canadians.

In the final, Canada faced Belgium, who had caused an upset by defeating Samoa in the semifinals. Despite a close match in the group stage, Canada dominated the final game, leading 14-10 at halftime and securing a 28-10 win with strong performances from Lockie Kratz, Jack Shaw, and Ethan Turner. Throughout the tournament, Canada also claimed victories against Italy and Madagascar, showcasing their determination and skill.

The SVNS 3 tournament featured eight men’s and women’s teams, with the top two from each category earning promotion to the HSBC SVNS 2 series. The upcoming series will take place in Nairobi, Montevideo, and Sao Paulo, serving as a stepping stone to the elite HSBC SVNS circuit. Canada’s journey to the Division 3 began with their victory at the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Sevens tournament in Trinidad, following their relegation from the top tier in 2024.

While aiming to reclaim their spot in the elite division, Canada faced challenges due to restructuring by World Rugby, which impacted the promotion-relegation system. Despite these obstacles, the Canadian men’s team has shown resilience and determination on their path to success in the rugby sevens circuit.
