“City Bus Overturns in Fredericton Ice Storm, 7 Injured”

Nathan Curry found himself in a frightening situation last Monday while on his way to the mall in Fredericton. The city bus he was traveling on overturned during a freezing rainstorm, causing chaos among the passengers. According to Curry, the bus driver attempted to maneuver around a stalled vehicle on the icy road when the back end of the bus lost traction, leading to the accident.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m. in the Hilton Road area off of Wilsey Road, as confirmed by Fredericton police. Seven individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were promptly taken to the hospital for treatment. On the same day, the city witnessed approximately 11 other weather-related accidents, with the New Brunswick RCMP recording a total of 58 collision reports within their jurisdiction between noon on December 29 and the following morning.

Recounting the harrowing experience, Curry described how he anticipated the crash and managed to brace himself for impact. However, the aftermath revealed that many passengers were injured and in need of assistance. Despite the shock and confusion, people on the bus rallied together to ensure everyone’s safety. The bus driver and several passengers had to escape through the shattered windows, with Curry even locating a first aid kit to help an injured man before emergency services arrived.

Reflecting on the circumstances that led to the crash, Curry attributed it to the severe freezing rain and treacherous road conditions prevailing that day. Fortunately, after a thorough check-up by first responders, Curry found himself unharmed and decided to walk back home, just a short distance away.

The investigation into the bus incident is ongoing, with CBC News seeking input from the city, responsible for Fredericton Transit. Transit manager Fred Gerrior emphasized the seriousness with which such accidents are treated and assured that a comprehensive investigation is underway. Gerrior acknowledged the complexities of operating during winter weather events and highlighted the need for caution when deciding to suspend services during storms.

While no unsafe conditions were reported by operators or dispatchers at the time of the crash, the unpredictability of ice storms necessitates continuous evaluation of conditions. Despite the significant damage sustained by the bus, transit services were not expected to be disrupted. Gerrior expressed the city’s willingness to engage in discussions once the investigation is concluded, ensuring transparency and accountability in addressing the incident.
