In anticipation of the upcoming Winter Olympics in Italy, Hockey Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee are set to reveal the Olympic women’s hockey team this Friday afternoon, just before they kick off the tournament against Finland on Feb. 5. The Canadian team, which secured gold in Beijing in 2022, faces a tough challenge this year from a strong American squad, following their recent dominant performance against Canada in the Rivalry Series.
Despite facing setbacks in the Rivalry Series, Canadian assistant captain Blayre Turnbull remains optimistic about the team’s chances at the Olympics. Head coach Troy Ryan echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of building on past experiences to set the team up for success.
The women’s team will consist of 23 players, with the final roster set to be announced on Friday. The coaching staff, led by Ryan, will be supported by a team of experienced assistants and consultants. Competing in Group A, Canada will face tough competition from the United States, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Finland.
Unlike previous years of centralized training, this year’s team preparation involved training camps and limited time together, posing a challenge for team chemistry. However, players like Daryl Watts and Sophie Jaques have seized the opportunity to showcase their skills for a spot on the national team.
In the forward lineup, established names like Marie-Philip Poulin and Sarah Fillier are expected to lead the charge, supported by emerging talents such as Emma Maltais and Kristen O’Neill. The battle for the goaltending spot remains open, with strong contenders like Ève Gascon and Kayle Osborne vying for the third position.
On defense, returning players like Renata Fast and Erin Ambrose provide stability, while newer faces like Jocelyne Larocque and Chloe Primerano look to make their mark. The final roster announcements will be closely watched as the anticipation builds for the upcoming Winter Olympics.
