“Instagram Influencer Gets Time-Traveling Twist”

Caro Claire Burke’s first book, “Yesteryear,” introduces a contemporary traditional wife influencer who showcases her idyllic farm life to 8 million followers. Unexpectedly, she finds herself transported back to the 1800s with no modern conveniences, facing the challenges of a bygone era.

The term “tradwife” refers to a group of influencers on platforms like TikTok and Instagram who embrace the role of a traditional wife, emphasizing homemaking and a conventional lifestyle.

Burke discussed how the ideal of a woman prioritizing her family and marriage, embodying submission, has resonated in our society and politics. This trend has drawn increased attention to accounts mirroring this ideal, such as the protagonist of “Yesteryear,” Natalie Heller Mills, offering a unique perspective on fame, tradition, and femininity.

In a conversation with Mattea Roach on “Bookends,” Burke delved into the complex discourse surrounding tradwives. She highlighted the intersection of gender studies and womanhood, challenging the notion that all choices made by women are inherently feminist. Despite criticisms, some view tradwives as empowered figures monetizing their lifestyles online.

Natalie Heller Mills, the protagonist of “Yesteryear,” is a multifaceted character described by Burke as ambitious, intelligent, bigoted, and rigid in her beliefs. Natalie’s struggles with emotional intelligence and self-awareness add depth to her portrayal in the novel.

Burke credited Anne Hathaway for her contribution to bringing Natalie to life in the book. Through collaborative discussions, including a film adaptation in progress, Hathaway’s insights helped Burke refine the themes of performance, surveillance, and womanhood in her storytelling.

Exploring the theme of womanhood through generations, Burke revealed that she envisioned her future daughter while crafting the book’s ending. By reflecting on familial legacies and the evolution of womanhood, Burke sought to convey a sense of continuity and empowerment for future generations of women.

As Burke navigated the complexities of writing “Yesteryear,” she found solace in the idea of passing on the baton of progress to future generations, emphasizing collective efforts in shaping a better future amidst societal challenges.
