“Youth Enthralled by Marine Wonders on Innu Nation’s Uinipeku Expedition”

In Sheshatshiu, Ocean Pokue, a young individual, marvels at the sensation of holding a starfish like a worm coated in sugar for the first time during the Innu Nation’s Uinipeku Expedition. Alongside Pokue, Jenny Hurley, another participant from Sheshatshiu, expresses her excitement for the daily new experiences on the journey.

The Uinipeku Expedition, now in its fourth year, is an annual voyage focused on ocean science research within Innu Nation marine zones between Sheshatshiu and Natuashish. This expedition spans two legs over approximately two and a half weeks on the MV Polar Athena, a vessel serving as a floating classroom and science laboratory.

Led by Gioia Montevecchi, the Uinipeku Expedition emphasizes ocean science and education, with co-lead Michael Hannaford highlighting the project’s origins in seeking scientific data related to conservation and economic prospects.

During a stop at Amishku-Shipiss beach within the Akami-Uapishk-KakKasuak-Mealy Mountains National Park Reserve, participants onboard the Polar Athena explore underwater footage showcasing a vibrant ecosystem in Lake Melville. The dive team lead, Claire Goodwin, describes the diverse marine life visible in the footage, including colorful sponges and anemones.

Simultaneously, Innu cultural activities unfold on the beach, offering youth opportunities to engage in archaeological digs, foraging workshops, and traditional art sessions. Innu Cultural Guardian Jodie Ashini leads a workshop on painting traditional Innu designs on caribou coats, highlighting the cultural significance of caribou to the Innu people.

Jack Penashue, Innu Nation’s superintendent collaborating with Parks Canada on the national park reserve, underlines the area’s importance for traditional practices and ceremonies, noting its connection to the renowned Innu canoe-maker, Pien Penashue.

As interest in the Uinipeku Expedition grows, organizers witness a surge in applications from Innu youth, aiming to inspire a passion for conservation and potentially spark future careers in related fields. Participants like Hayden Gregoire, an 18-year-old from Sheshatshiu, express their enthusiasm for ocean science and aspirations for a career in research following their transformative experiences on the expedition.
