Rob Shaw, a wheelchair tennis player from North Bay, Ontario, is set to retire from professional competition following his participation in the upcoming Australian Open, as announced by Tennis Canada. Shaw, 36, has primarily competed in the quad division, tailored for athletes with permanent physical disabilities affecting their upper extremities and at least three other limbs.
Throughout his career, Shaw has amassed an impressive record of 54 ITF titles, including 25 in singles and 29 in doubles. Notably, he holds the record for the most combined titles among Canadian players, achieving 10 victories at the Birmingham Nationals. In 2023, Shaw reached his career peak rankings of No. 6 in singles and No. 3 in doubles.
Shaw’s breakthrough came in 2022 when he secured a spot in the top eight, earning a debut entry into a Grand Slam event at the U.S. Open. Partnering with David Wagner, he finished as the doubles runner-up. Subsequently, Shaw claimed second place in doubles at both Roland-Garros and Wimbledon in 2023, alongside his partner from Australia, Heath Davidson.
On the international stage, Shaw clinched a gold medal in 2019 and a silver medal in 2023 at the Para Pan American Games. Additionally, he represented Canada at the Paralympic Games in 2021 and 2024, advancing to the singles quarterfinals in both editions.
Shaw’s final Grand Slam appearance will be at the Australian Open beginning on January 27. Following his retirement from competitive play, he will transition to a part-time role as the Wheelchair Tennis high performance consultant at Tennis Canada.
