The City of Vancouver has honored actor Ryan Reynolds, a prominent Hollywood figure, with the Freedom of the City award for his philanthropic and cultural contributions. Reynolds, a Vancouver native renowned for his roles in the Marvel Comics’ Deadpool series, received the accolade at a private ceremony on Thursday.
Acknowledged for his unwavering support of local charities like Covenant House Vancouver and the Greater Vancouver Food Bank, as well as his contributions to the 2021 B.C. flood relief efforts, Reynolds expressed his gratitude in a statement, emphasizing Vancouver’s influence on his life and work.
Reynolds, who has previously been awarded the Order of British Columbia and the Order of Canada, was recognized with the Freedom of the City award for his exceptional achievements on a national and international level, bringing recognition to Vancouver through his acclaimed work.
In his acceptance speech, Reynolds conveyed his humility and surreal feelings about being part of Vancouver’s history, stating, “Vancouver shaped who I am, and I carry it with me in everything I do.” The award is reserved for individuals who have attained the highest merit with global acclaim while also highlighting the city’s reputation.
