University of Waterloo doctoral candidate Kaveeshan Thurairajah recently received the Ig Nobel Physics Prize for his work on creating a splash-free urinal, a humorous counterpart to the prestigious Nobel Prizes. Thurairajah, under the guidance of fluid physicist Zhao Pan, and their team designed and tested various urinal prototypes to prevent splashing. The winning design, named Nautilus, was deemed the most effective and easy to clean compared to other prototypes like Cornocopia.
During the awards ceremony in Zurich, Thurairajah and his colleagues donned yellow raincoats, highlighting the quirky nature of their research. Despite the unconventional topic, Thurairajah emphasized the practical benefits of their work in improving public restroom experiences. Their findings, detailed in a publication in the journal PNAS Nexus, contribute to enhancing public spaces for societal well-being.
Apart from Thurairajah’s team, other Canadian researchers were also recognized at the event. University of Toronto researchers were awarded the Economics Prize for their study on unethical behavior, while McGill University scientists were part of the team honored for their innovative use of mosquito proboscises in 3D printing technology. The Ig Nobel Prizes, organized by the magazine Annals of Improbable Research, have moved to Europe after years in the United States to facilitate international participation and collaboration among scientists worldwide.
