The White House revealed on Tuesday that President Donald Trump is exploring various avenues to potentially acquire Greenland, including the option of involving the U.S. military, as part of his renewed interest in controlling the strategically located island, despite resistance from European nations. Trump considers the acquisition of Greenland a vital national security measure to deter adversaries in the Arctic region, according to a statement from the White House.
Tillie Martinussen, a former Greenland lawmaker, expressed the widespread discontent among Greenland’s residents regarding the continuous discussions about taking over the island by Trump and his administration. Greenland has consistently expressed its opposition to becoming part of the United States.
Greenland’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, has expressed his disapproval of the pressure from Washington while emphasizing the importance of maintaining good relations with the U.S. European leaders, along with Canada, have voiced their support for Greenland’s autonomy, emphasizing that decisions regarding the future of Greenland and Denmark should be made by the Danish people.
Despite strong opposition from various quarters, Trump remains undeterred in his pursuit of making Greenland a U.S. hub, especially in light of increasing interest from Russia and China in the region. The recent capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has further emboldened Trump, leading him to assert American dominance in the Western Hemisphere.
Discussions within the U.S. administration include potential approaches such as purchasing Greenland outright or establishing a Compact of Free Association (COFA) with the territory, a framework that provides financial aid and defense support while stopping short of full annexation. Diplomacy remains the preferred approach for the U.S. government, with dealmaking seen as a favorable option by the president.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that recent statements regarding Greenland did not indicate an imminent military action but rather a diplomatic effort to negotiate a potential purchase from Denmark. Lawmakers, including members of Trump’s own party, have pushed back against the administration’s stance on Greenland, emphasizing the importance of respecting Denmark’s sovereignty and the long-standing alliance between the two nations.
Administration officials highlight the strategic importance of Greenland due to its mineral resources with significant technological and military value. Despite challenges such as labor shortages and infrastructure limitations, Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland remains steadfast for the remainder of his term in office.
