A multi-vehicle pileup in Laval, Quebec, resulted in tragic consequences, with a six-year-old girl losing her life and several individuals sustaining injuries. Among the injured was a five-month-old baby who remains in critical condition. The incident occurred on Route 335, between Dagenais Boulevard and Saint-Saëns Street, on Monday evening.
Initially, nine individuals, including three adults, the baby, and the young girl who later passed away, were reported injured by Urgences-santé. Four other individuals suffered injuries but were not considered to be in life-threatening conditions, as per the paramedic service.
Following the collision, a 40-year-old man was briefly taken into custody by the Laval police before being released. Subsequently, the police handed over the investigation to Quebec’s Crown prosecutor’s office, which requested additional information. Consequently, the man was freed, but potential charges may be pursued in the future.
In response to the tragic event, Laval city councillor David De Cotis expressed his condolences on Facebook and emphasized the perilous conditions of Route 335 in the area. He advocated for immediate safety measures such as concrete barriers, temporary traffic-control devices, and a prompt assessment by transport authorities to prevent future accidents and protect the community, particularly children.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Quebec’s Transport Ministry acknowledged the gravity of the situation and mentioned that ministry representatives had been dispatched to gather information. A comprehensive analysis will be conducted within two months, adhering to standard protocols. While the results of the analysis will not be disclosed during ongoing investigations, the ministry assured that necessary actions would be taken to enhance road safety.
The ministry clarified that no prior safety requests had been made by the City of Laval for that specific road section. The current lane setup is temporary due to the Highway 19 extension project, with plans for a permanent divided roadway featuring a central median upon project completion.
