International speed skaters to watch out for at the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics

Jordan Stolz from the United States, a 21-year-old rising star, aims to emulate Eric Heiden’s legendary feat from 46 years ago by potentially clinching five gold medals. Stolz has been a dominant force in the 500m, 1,000m, and 1,500m disciplines, securing world titles in these events for two consecutive seasons. Despite battling pneumonia last year, he showcased his prowess by consistently reaching the podium. Maintaining an undefeated streak in the 1,000m and 1,500m at this season’s World Cup, Stolz also excels in mass start races and may contribute to the American team pursuit squad, enhancing his medal prospects.

Martina Sablikova from Czechia is set to mark a remarkable journey as she prepares for her sixth and final Olympic appearance. With an impressive tally of seven Olympic medals and 27 world single distance championship medals, including 16 golds, Sablikova remains a formidable contender despite her veteran status.

Metoděj Jílek, also from Czechia, made a striking debut at the senior level during last year’s world championships, securing a bronze in the 10,000m and finishing fifth in the 5,000m. Leading the World Cup long distance standings, Jílek’s outstanding performance in the 10K event solidified his position as a strong medal contender, particularly in the mass start races.

Italy’s David Ghiotto, a bronze medalist in the 10,000m event at the previous Olympics, strives for gold with the support of his home crowd. As a three-time reigning world champion in the 10,000m, Ghiotto possesses the experience and skill to challenge his competitors in the distance events and contribute significantly to Italy’s team pursuit ambitions.

Miho Tagaki from Japan, a seasoned skater heading to her fourth Olympics, boasts an illustrious career with seven Olympic medals, including two golds. As the reigning Olympic champion in the 1000m and a strong contender in the 1500m and team pursuit events, Tagaki remains a force to be reckoned with at the Milano-Cortina Games.

Damian Zurek representing Poland gained recognition after clinching a bronze in the 500m at the 2024 world single distance championships. His consistent performance in the 500m and 1,000m events positions him as a formidable challenger, especially after defeating top skaters like Jordan Stolz in recent competitions.

Femke Kok from the Netherlands, a two-time world champion and world record holder in the 500m, aspires to add an Olympic gold to her impressive accolades. Undefeated in the 500m at this season’s World Cup events, Kok’s exceptional form and record-breaking performances make her a strong contender in multiple speed skating disciplines.

Jutta Leerdam, also from the Netherlands, aims to bounce back after a setback at the Dutch Olympic trials and secure a gold medal at the upcoming Games. With a remarkable track record of ten medals at the world single distance championships, Leerdam possesses the skill and determination to shine on the Olympic stage.

Jenning de Boo, a promising skater from the Netherlands, poses a significant challenge to top contenders like Jordan Stolz in the 500m and 1,000m events. His consistent podium finishes on the World Cup circuit reflect his potential to emerge as a strong medal contender in these disciplines.

Sander Eitrem from Norway, the world record holder in the men’s 5,000m, showcases remarkable prowess in long-distance events. With a strong podium presence in recent World Cup seasons, Eitrem aims to continue his success at the Milano-Cortina Games and potentially secure a podium finish in the 10,000m event.

Ragne Wiklund from Norway, a rising star in speed skating, aims to capitalize on her recent successes and secure multiple medals at the upcoming Games. Leading the World Cup long distance standings for four consecutive years, Wiklund’s consistent performances position her as a top contender for podium finishes in the 1,500m, 3,000m, and 5,000m events.
