Environment Canada has issued snow squall alerts for the Niagara Region, warning of heavy snow and blowing winds in specific areas on Monday. The weather agency initially issued orange alerts for snow squalls in Niagara Falls and Fort Erie early in the morning, but later downgraded them to yellow. A yellow warning for a snow squall was also issued for St. Catharines, which has now concluded.
In Niagara Falls and Fort Erie, snow squalls are expected to persist throughout the day. Environment Canada has cautioned that local snowfall totals could reach 20 to 30 cm, accompanied by westerly winds gusting between 70 to 90 km/h.
These strong westerly winds are anticipated to arise later in the morning, leading to reduced visibility due to heavy snow and blowing snow, as per Environment Canada. The agency advises individuals to be ready for rapidly changing and worsening travel conditions, recommending the avoidance of non-essential travel and outdoor activities.
In Environment Canada’s color-coded warning system, orange represents the second-highest level of seriousness, succeeding red and preceding yellow — the least severe warning.
