“Significant Snowfall Expected on Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula”

The final weekend of the new year is set to conclude with significant snowfall on the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador. Meteorologist Wanda Batten from Environment Canada informed CBC News about an approaching weather system affecting the southeastern part of the island. She noted that this system is unique compared to previous ones this winter.

The path of the weather system is challenging to forecast, but it is anticipated to bring 15 to 25 cm of snow accumulation to the Avalon Peninsula. As the system progresses westward, the snowfall amount is expected to decrease considerably. Wind speeds are also likely to increase, with gusts possibly reaching up to 70 km/h by Sunday night into Monday morning. Temperatures in the Avalon region are forecasted to drop to around −2°C as the system nears.

Batten warned of potentially reduced visibility due to blustery conditions, advising travelers to stay updated on the evolving forecast as uncertainties with this system are high. She mentioned the possibility of delayed school and office openings on Monday morning based on the current forecast.
