As part of his role at the robotics company, Pierce engages in product testing, particularly with Arlo, the assistive robotic arm designed by Sielo Robotics. Using a space mouse, a device capable of navigating 3D environments in six directions, Pierce can control Arlo with precision.
Despite an initial learning curve, Pierce noted that the latest version of the robotic arm, the fourth-generation model, offers a user-friendly experience akin to playing a video game. He actively provides feedback to his team, highlighting both the impressive features and areas for improvement in Arlo.
Sielo Robotics, which originated at the University of Ottawa, emphasizes drawing inspiration from individuals with real-life experiences. The company recently secured a million dollars in seed funding in May, signaling an acceleration in their projects.
Collaborating with The 8-80 Collaborative, a partnership between the CHEO Research Institute and Bruyère Health, Sielo Robotics is still based at the University of Ottawa. To expand their reach into households and communities, they aim to enlist more testers like Pierce.
Reflecting on the impact of Arlo, Pierce expressed how the robotic arm could revolutionize daily tasks for individuals with disabilities, simplifying activities such as wiping one’s nose or having a drink without extensive assistance requirements.
Rafaël Hébert, the chief technology officer at Sielo Robotics, highlighted the progress users like Pierce have made with Arlo, enabling them to perform actions like taking selfies and handling objects independently.
Addressing the complexities of replicating human actions in varied environments, Hébert emphasized the importance of user feedback in enhancing the technology’s adaptability. Masoud Karimi, the robotics control engineer at Sielo, is focused on developing an AI-driven system for the robotic arm to streamline routine tasks effectively.
Sielo Robotics aims to create a cost-effective device covered by insurance, making it accessible to a wider audience. The recent seed funding will expedite their development efforts, propelling them closer to introducing robotic arms into households for beta testing by the year’s end.
