Rodeo Icon ‘Ricky Ticky’ Retires After 50 Years

Rick Wanchuk, famously known as Ricky Ticky, is a well-recognized figure in the world of small-town rodeo, captivating fans from British Columbia to Manitoba and beyond. After nearly 50 years of entertaining rodeo audiences with his vibrant persona, Wanchuk bid farewell to his iconic yellow shirt and oversized Wrangler’s this summer. Despite his desire to continue, Wanchuk retired due to his feet not keeping up with his mind.

Approaching 74 years old, Wanchuk has been a consistent presence at various rodeo events like the Grande Prairie Stompede and Lea Park Pro Rodeo, performing at numerous Saskatchewan rodeos. He graced the Canadian Finals Rodeo stage in Edmonton five times and even showcased his talents in Australia in 1992. However, he holds a special place in his heart for the smaller rodeo stops.

Wanchuk’s final performance took place on August 31 at the Lakeland Rodeo Association Finals in St. Paul, Alberta. Although he never ventured to the U.S., preferring to stay in Canada, his legacy continues through his sons Kolby and Kyle, nicknamed Halfchuk and Quarterchuk, who are making their mark in bronc riding and roping. Additionally, Wanchuk’s nephew, Casey Wanchuk, has been groomed to carry on the family tradition of clowning in rodeos.

Casey expressed admiration for his uncle and father, Tony Twochuk, who inspired his passion for clowning. While he aims to bring his own style to the arena, Casey is committed to upholding the Wanchuk legacy. As Rick steps into retirement, he looks forward to reconnecting with old acquaintances at rodeos, cherishing the joy of sharing smiles and conversations with familiar faces.
