Local snowmobilers, skiers, and snowshoers in Flin Flon, Manitoba, are facing challenges as they work to clear trails due to unfavorable snow conditions and the aftermath of last summer’s fires. The fires caused extensive damage, including downed trees, burned landscapes, uprooted roots, and the destruction of buildings and bridges. Residents returning to Flin Flon, Creighton, and Denare Beach after fleeing the fires in May found significant devastation, with nearly 300 homes destroyed in Denare Beach alone.
John Trumbley, a key figure in the Border Explorers Snowmobile Club, witnessed the destruction firsthand. His son lost his home, and the club’s headquarters narrowly escaped the flames. The club is responsible for maintaining over 200 kilometers of sled trails annually, with a significant portion of the trails heavily impacted by the fires.
Leslie Beck, co-chair of wâhkôhtowin Trails, expressed plans to expand their activities near Flin Flon and Denare Beach, but these plans have been put on hold due to extensive damage in surrounding areas. The forests in the region are expected to take decades to recover from the fire damage.
The Flin Flon Ski Club, which oversees approximately 28 kilometers of trails, also experienced damage from the fires, affecting six of their trails, destroying infrastructure, and disrupting trail access. Despite the challenges, signs of nature’s resilience are emerging, providing hope for recovery.
The winter season has brought further difficulties with light snowfall impeding trail maintenance efforts. The snowstorm in October exacerbated the situation by causing additional damage to already compromised areas, making trail clearance a challenging task for volunteers.
Despite the obstacles, community members have rallied to support the restoration efforts. Volunteer efforts are crucial for clearing trails and ensuring safe access for outdoor activities. Both the Border Explorers and Flin Flon Ski Club are gearing up for upcoming events, with plans to host races and community gatherings, showcasing the community’s resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
