“Record Snowfall in Alberta Brings Relief to Drought-Stricken Farmers”

In December, Edmonton, Alberta, experienced a notable increase in snowfall, mirroring similar patterns across the province. The heightened precipitation levels have brought relief to farmers who faced drought conditions in 2025. Meteorologist Terri Lang from Environment and Climate Change Canada revealed that by December 28, Edmonton had received precipitation 416% above its 30-year average, marking the city’s sixth wettest December on record.

Lang shared data indicating other municipalities’ December precipitation levels: Banff at 308% above average, Fort McMurray at 318% (sixth wettest), Grande Prairie at 418% (fourth wettest), and Fort Vermilion at 245% (third wettest). These figures highlight the unusual nature of this winter’s snowfall, with many locations experiencing their wettest December in years.

The persistent snow-producing systems following a consistent path have allowed snow accumulation to build up, offering hope to farmers. This shift is a welcome change from the prolonged drought conditions experienced by ranchers and farmers. Red Deer and Fort Chipewyan saw 106% above-average precipitation, while Southern Alberta, including Calgary and Lloydminster, received slightly below-average precipitation compared to historical data.

While the current snowfall is beneficial, Lang cautioned that its impact will heavily depend on the spring thaw. A rapid or premature melt could lead to runoff and potential flooding, especially if the ground remains frozen. Dr. Linda Gorim, a Western Grains Research Foundation chair at the University of Alberta, emphasized the importance of moisture penetrating the soil effectively to support crop growth.

Raymond Chittick, a local farm owner, highlighted the positive impact of snowfall in replenishing the region’s water table, particularly for improving water sources like dugouts. However, he noted that significant rainfall in June would have a more substantial effect on farming operations. Looking ahead, Lang advised Albertans to brace for continued snowfall, as the weather pattern indicates ongoing wintry conditions.

As the snowy season persists, being prepared with snow shovels remains essential for residents.
