A man from northern Quebec, aged 36, made a court appearance on Tuesday following a shooting incident with officers from the Nunavik Police Service on December 20 that led to a tragic outcome. Local authorities have confirmed that a six-year-old girl, discovered injured in a residence in Inukjuak, Que., passed away ten days after the incident. Andrew Naluktuk is charged with multiple offenses, including firing a weapon at two peace officers, assaulting them with a weapon, assaulting another individual, and causing bodily harm to a child.
Naluktuk appeared in court via video link for a brief hearing and his case has been adjourned until January 23. According to Quebec’s police oversight body, the incident unfolded when Nunavik officers exchanged gunfire with a person outside a house in the community following a report of a potential threat to occupants around 3:30 a.m. The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes stated that the individual sustained injuries during the police operation and was taken into custody, while another person inside the residence, who was severely injured, later died. The cause of death has not been disclosed by officials.
