The Quebec Liberal Party’s leadership race is set to commence on January 12, 2026, following Pablo Rodriguez’s six-month term. A new leader will be selected on March 14, 2026. Currently, Marc Tanguay, the MNA for LaFontaine, is holding the position of interim leader of the Official Opposition in the National Assembly. He took over this role after Rodriguez resigned last week amidst internal party turmoil. The party is facing accusations of illegal campaign contributions to secure Rodriguez’s victory in the leadership contest. Quebec’s anti-corruption police, UPAC, have initiated an investigation into the alleged pay-for-vote scheme. Despite the allegations, Rodriguez maintains that he was unaware of any such misconduct. Those interested in running for the leadership position have until February 13 to submit their applications and gather 750 signatures from eligible members. Additionally, candidates must provide a $30,000 deposit to enter the race and adhere to an election spending cap of $120,000, excluding the deposit.
