On a recent weekend at Erin’s Pub in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, a unique event unfolded, deviating from the pub’s usual Saturday routine. Owner Allan Bearns graced the stage, not for a music performance, but to embark on a distinctive initiative he dubbed his “unconventional way” of supporting the community.
Bearns dedicated the afternoon to a full recital of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic novel “The Hobbit,” captivating an audience with his rendition of the timeless 1937 tale. The purpose behind this marathon reading session was to raise funds for The Gathering Place, a charitable organization aiding the homeless population in the city.
The chosen day held significance as it coincided with Tolkien’s birthday, prompting Bearns to draw inspiration from the author’s themes of companionship and exploration. By bringing Tolkien’s narrative to life through his reading, Bearns aimed to contribute to the cause of The Gathering Place, which serves the marginalized in the community.
In Bearns’ view, Tolkien’s literary works encapsulate the essence of humanity’s virtues, portraying ordinary individuals as heroes in extraordinary circumstances. Drawing a parallel between the daunting task of reading “The Hobbit” in one sitting and Bilbo Baggins’ triumph over Smaug the dragon, Bearns emphasized the symbolic significance of his endeavor.
While Bearns acknowledged the lighthearted nature of his fundraising approach, he underscored the gravity of the homelessness issue, a cause close to his heart. Reflecting on his own past experiences of transient housing situations, including periods of homelessness in Alberta, Bearns highlighted the diverse manifestations of homelessness, ranging from couch-surfing to makeshift accommodations.
Having personally grappled with housing instability as recently as 2018, Bearns expressed his deep-rooted concern for the unaddressed challenges within the community. He commended The Gathering Place for its proactive efforts in combating homelessness, emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to tackle this pervasive issue.
The marathon reading session of “The Hobbit” spanned nearly 11 hours, culminating just before midnight, with Bearns successfully raising $1,292 in support of The Gathering Place by the following morning. This heartfelt initiative showcased Bearns’ commitment to leveraging his platform for social good, shedding light on the enduring impact of community-driven actions in addressing critical social challenges.
