“Polar Bears’ Onshore Visits Linked to Climate Change”

In Canada’s northern regions, an uptick in polar bear sightings near communities has been noted by residents over the years. Researchers previously believed that these bears, appearing onshore more frequently, were driven by hunger due to dwindling sea ice, possibly leading them to seek human encounters for sustenance.

However, a comprehensive 11-year study conducted by experts from the University of Saskatchewan and University of Manitoba reveals a different perspective. Contrary to popular belief, the study found that it wasn’t just emaciated bears approaching communities. Instead, all bears, regardless of body condition, age, or gender, were more likely to venture onshore the longer they stayed off the ice.

Led by Douglas Clark, a professor at the U of S, the research involved monitoring polar bears in Wapusk National Park near Hudson Bay, deploying trail cameras to track their movements. The study, recently published in Arctic Science, demonstrated that the bears’ increased proximity to humans was primarily due to climate change-induced sea ice reduction, compelling them to spend extended periods onshore.

Despite some bears experiencing hunger, there was no evidence of them actively hunting humans. The study emphasized that while nutritional stress was a factor, it did not drive bears to seek out communities en masse for food. Both Clark and Alex Crawford, an assistant professor at the U of M, stressed that understanding these dynamics is crucial in managing human-polar bear interactions.

Looking ahead, the research team plans to continue monitoring polar bears to assess potential shifts in their behavior resulting from long-term changes in their environment and food sources.
