“Parks Canada Warns Against Skiing Stunt on Rideau Canal”

Parks Canada has issued a warning against skiing over the Rideau Canal following a video showcasing a stunt performer attempting the feat and narrowly succeeding, which has gained viral attention. The risky endeavor is depicted in a 22-minute video released by a group named The Jetskis on YouTube during the Christmas season. A condensed version of the canal jump has circulated on various social media platforms.

The footage captures 21-year-old Tai How skiing through the trees on the slope near Parliament Hill alongside the Ottawa Locks. He accelerates off a small snow ramp, soaring over the 9.7-meter gap with his arms flailing, before crash-landing on the opposite side, losing his skis into the empty lock below. Notably, he was not wearing a helmet during the stunt.

In response to the incident, Parks Canada, the governing body responsible for overseeing the historical waterway and its renowned lock system, released a public safety advisory earlier this week. The notice emphasized that unauthorized activities like ski jumping are prohibited at the Rideau Canal National Historic Site, including the Ottawa Locks. Stricter enforcement measures have been implemented, with potential fines for violations.

When interviewed in Nelson, B.C., How recounted performing the daring jump in February while on a visit to Ottawa from his current residence in Montreal, where he connected with the rest of The Jetskis crew. Despite sustaining an injury to his thumb upon landing, How expressed confidence and a sense of being drawn to the stunt, characterizing it as a personal challenge.

Conversely, local authorities expressed concerns about potential imitators trying to replicate the stunt after its widespread circulation on social media. Benjamin Gales, Parks Canada’s visitor services manager for the Rideau Canal, warned against copycat attempts, highlighting the substantial risks involved. Trespassing fines of up to $10,000 can be imposed by Parks Canada wardens.

The Ottawa Paramedic Service also condemned the risky jump as an extremely dangerous stunt, citing the severe injuries that could result, including broken bones, neck and back injuries, and head trauma. Deschamps, the superintendent of public information for the service, emphasized the critical nature of the rescue operations that would be required in case of a mishap.

Despite the safety concerns raised by authorities, How defended his passion for extreme skiing, acknowledging the inherent risks while advocating for responsible risk-taking within one’s skill level. He stressed the importance of challenging oneself while exercising caution to avoid unnecessary dangers.
