A young boy, accompanied by his father after preschool, faced an unsettling encounter as captured in photos released by Minnesota school authorities. According to reports, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents apprehended a five-year-old child, identified as Liam Conejo Ramos, outside his home in Columbia Heights, Minnesota. The superintendent of Columbia Heights Public Schools, Zena Stenvik, expressed dismay, stating that the child was seemingly used as a lure while officers pursued his father.
Despite pleas from another adult at the residence to care for the child, the agents proceeded to remove Liam from the vehicle and directed him to knock on the door, attempting to ascertain if anyone else was present at the house. The incident has drawn criticism, with the family’s lawyer, Marc Prokosch, denouncing the detention of children and families seeking asylum as inhumane.
Following the episode, Liam and his father were reportedly taken to the Dilley Immigration Processing Centre in Texas. The detention has sparked outrage in Columbia Heights, a Minneapolis suburb that has witnessed heightened tensions due to a recent immigration crackdown by authorities.
While the Department of Homeland Security clarified that ICE did not target the child specifically, but rather was focused on apprehending his father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, labeled an “illegal alien from Ecuador,” questions remain about the treatment of minors in such operations. The agency emphasized that safety protocols are in place to ensure the well-being of children in such circumstances.
Minnesota officials, including Mayor Jacob Frey and Governor Tim Walz, condemned the incident, emphasizing the need to protect children and families from aggressive enforcement actions. The detainment of Liam has sparked concerns about the treatment of vulnerable individuals in immigration enforcement operations, prompting calls for greater transparency and compassion in such situations.
School authorities revealed that Liam’s case is not an isolated incident, with several other students from the district being apprehended by ICE agents in recent weeks. The series of arrests have raised alarms about the impact on children and families within the community, highlighting the broader implications of immigration enforcement practices. The Department of Homeland Security has been urged to provide further details on the fate of these detained individuals amidst growing public scrutiny.
