A recently established tree nursery owned by the Osoyoos Indian Band in Oliver, B.C., is set to produce millions of tree seedlings annually to aid in the restoration of forests impacted by wildfires. The Osoyoos Forest Nursery, located on over 10 hectares of land, is home to nearly 500,000 square feet of outdoor space where young seedlings are being nurtured for future reforestation projects in the region and beyond.
Chief Clarence Louie highlighted the importance of replacing trees lost to wildfires in British Columbia, expressing pride in the significant contribution the Osoyoos Indian Band nursery will make. Following the devastation of the Inkaneep Creek Wildfire on approximately 20,000 hectares of band land in 2021, the nursery’s role in reforestation becomes crucial.
In a unique partnership with K&C Silviculture Ltd., the nation’s first forest nursery is gearing up to produce around 18 million seedlings annually once fully operational. Chief Louie emphasized the significance of not only logging trees but also growing them to support sustainability efforts within the community.
Due to the prevalent drought conditions in the south Okanagan, water conservation strategies have been integrated into the nursery’s design. Peter Flett, head of operations for Nk’Mip Forestry, highlighted the implementation of water drainage systems to prevent wastage during tree irrigation.
Jill Harvey, a researcher from Thompson Rivers University, commended the initiative as a positive step towards reforestation, emphasizing the broader benefits beyond tree planting. She emphasized the importance of selecting tree species resilient to climate change and capable of thriving in the region’s arid climate, such as lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine, and western larch.
Harvey stressed the need for strategic planning in reforestation efforts, considering factors like fuel accumulation and preserving wildfire-affected areas near communities. Long-term forest management plans are crucial for ensuring resilience against climate change and wildfires in the years to come.
Funded by the federal government’s 2 Billion Trees program, the Osoyoos Forest Nursery aligns with national efforts to address climate change and biodiversity loss through tree planting initiatives. Despite the recent decision to reduce the program’s target to one billion trees by 2031, the nursery remains committed to its mission of sustainable forestry practices.
