NDP Leader Criticizes Deputy for Jump to Liberals

Interim federal NDP Leader Don Davies has criticized Ontario NDP deputy leader Doly Begum for what he perceives as undermining democracy by deciding to run for a federal Liberal seat left vacant by former MP Bill Blair. Davies expressed disappointment in Begum’s move, suggesting it betrays the values and policies she previously championed. He highlighted the shift to a party that he views as governing conservatively.

Begum, who represented Scarborough Southwest at the provincial level, announced her resignation to pursue the federal byelection in the same riding. She emphasized her commitment to uniting and strengthening Canada during this critical period. The decision drew mixed reactions, with NDP members like Alexandre Boulerice expressing disappointment in Begum’s departure from the party amid its loss of official status.

Meanwhile, Blair’s departure from the House of Commons to assume a diplomatic post has set the stage for a federal byelection in Scarborough Southwest. The Liberals have been quick to fill the candidate roster, with Begum being the second announced contender this year. This follows the recent announcement of Dr. Danielle Martin as the Liberal candidate for the University-Rosedale byelection, triggered by Chrystia Freeland’s resignation.

In response to Begum’s resignation, Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles thanked Begum for her service, acknowledging the shift in representation for Scarborough Southwest. Concurrently, Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith expressed his intention to seek the Ontario Liberal Party’s nomination for Begum’s vacated provincial seat. Erskine-Smith’s decision aligns with his goal of rebuilding the provincial Liberal Party to better serve Ontarians.

Born in Bangladesh and raised in Scarborough, Begum’s background includes advocacy roles in healthcare and community services, along with her legislative responsibilities in Ontario. Her career trajectory reflects a commitment to public service and community development, resonating with her constituents in Scarborough Southwest.
