Moh Ahmed Leads Canada’s Charge at Cross-Country Championships

Moh Ahmed has dedicated about two decades to track competition but has always been intrigued by the collaborative nature of cross-country running. During his junior season at the University of Wisconsin, Ahmed, then 19 years old, contributed to the Badgers’ 2011 NCAA victory, earning All-American recognition four times.

Reflecting on his achievements, Ahmed, now 35, values the 2011 NCAA title as the pinnacle of his career. In 2021, he made history by becoming Canada’s first Olympic 5,000-meter medalist, securing a silver in Tokyo. Additionally, Ahmed boasts a track record as a five-time NCAA All-American and clinched the Big Ten outdoor conference championship in 2010 (10,000m) and 2012 (5,000m).

Currently preparing for the World Athletics Cross-Country Championships in Tallahassee, Florida, Ahmed will lead Canada in the men’s senior 10-kilometer race, aiming for further success. His fellow Canadian teammates include Xavier Perras-Phaneuf, Santiago Gaitan, Matt Talbot, Evan Burke, and Philippe Morneau-Cartier.

Recently, Ahmed triumphed at the national championships in London, Ontario, securing his first grass event title. The top four athletes from each team will contribute to the standings at the upcoming championships, where 20 countries will be represented by at least four athletes.

Ahmed, who is renegotiating his contract with Nike, remains undeterred by past injuries, including a left calf strain and various other setbacks that affected his performance. Looking ahead, he remains optimistic about his future running endeavors and aims to continue his success in the sport.

The upcoming World Athletics Cross-Country Championships in Tallahassee will witness fierce competition from 485 athletes representing 52 countries. The races, set to take place at Apalachee Regional Park, promise challenging terrains mirroring the landscape of Tallahassee and Florida, incorporating elements like sand, water, and mud obstacles.

Ahmed’s participation in the championships, alongside other Canadian athletes in different categories, signifies the nation’s strong presence in the global running scene. With the event offering a platform for athletes to showcase their skills, Ahmed and his teammates are poised for a competitive and thrilling experience in Tallahassee.
