“Modest Accommodations Await Winter Olympians in Cortina Valley”

Winter Olympians staying in Cortina d’Ampezzo’s Athletes Village during the upcoming Milan Cortina Games will not experience luxury accommodations. The temporary Village, housing up to 1,400 athletes and team members, comprises 377 rented mobile homes closely arranged in a valley. The rooms are modest, offering a unique proximity to the Dolomites.

While the accommodations may lack lavish amenities, the location provides a serene setting with the sounds of the mountains. The Italian government commissioner overseeing the infrastructure for the Games, Fabio Saldini, highlighted the temporary nature of the Village, emphasizing its high design quality and eventual removal post-event.

Providing lodging for athletes is crucial for Olympic organizers, especially for the geographically spread Milan Cortina Games. Notably, Norway has opted for hotel accommodations over the official Olympic villages. However, countries like the U.S., Germany, and Italy plan for their athletes to stay in the villages.

Cortina will host various sports events during the Games, with the Village playing a pivotal role in accommodating athletes. The Village features common areas such as a gym, game room, and offices, in addition to individual rooms equipped with heating controls for personalized comfort. The total cost for the Village amounts to 38 million euros ($44 million US), with plans to repurpose the mobile homes post-event at camping sites across Italy.
