The issue of fraud in child-care programs in Minnesota has been a focal point for U.S. President Donald Trump and other Republicans on social media and right-wing cable news shows. The Trump administration recently announced a freeze on child-care funds to Minnesota, demanding an audit of certain daycare centers following a series of fraud cases involving state government programs.
In response to the withholding of funds, Governor Walz accused Trump and his allies of attempting to sow division and negativity in the state. The strained relationship between Trump and Walz has persisted beyond the 2024 campaign, with Trump failing to offer condolences to Walz after the tragic death of former Democratic state House Speaker Melissa Hortman.
Walz, a former high school teacher and football coach, was chosen by Harris for his diverse background advocating for working families. Throughout his political career, Walz has represented a moderate Democratic stance, having previously served in the U.S. Congress before becoming governor in 2018. His decision not to seek re-election has garnered support from Harris, who commended his dedication to serving the people of Minnesota.
During his tenure as governor, Walz faced challenges in a divided legislature but managed to push through progressive policies with the support of Democratic majorities. His initiatives included significant changes in areas such as abortion rights, transgender healthcare, marijuana legalization, and social programs. However, his administration was marred by a large-scale pandemic food fraud scheme involving numerous individuals, primarily from the Somali American community.
As Walz exits the gubernatorial race, various Republican candidates, including MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, are vying to challenge the Democratic nominee in the upcoming election cycle. With 36 states holding gubernatorial elections in 2026, the race for Minnesota’s governorship is expected to draw significant attention.
