Manitoba Farmers Shift to Corn Amid Wheat Profit Challenges

Manitoba’s prairie landscape, typically dominated by fields of wheat, is witnessing a shift this year as many farmers opt for alternative crops.

Andrew James, a farmer in the RM of Springfield, is making significant changes to his crop rotation, increasing his corn planting to 25% while completely eliminating wheat cultivation for the first time in six years. The decision comes as a response to the low profit margins associated with wheat farming due to increased costs of fertilizer and seeds, despite wheat selling at a similar price of $7 a bushel in 2025 compared to previous years.

Covering approximately 1,200 hectares of land, James and his brother are diversifying their crops to include corn, soybeans, sunflowers, and oats in equal proportions. This diversification is a strategic move to mitigate risks and adapt to the evolving market demands.

Transitioning to corn and sunflowers requires specialized equipment and additional storage facilities, posing challenges for the farmers. However, James emphasizes the long-term benefits of investing in these crops to secure their farming future.

The trend towards corn cultivation is not unique to James, as other farmers in the region are also showing interest in this crop. Seed stores, like Marc Hutlet Seeds, are witnessing an uptick in sales of corn, soybeans, and canola, indicating a broader shift towards these crops in the farming community.

While the introduction of new crops and regenerative farming practices is gaining traction, the decision to diversify crops ultimately hinges on factors like market demand, weather conditions, and input costs. Despite facing challenges like a wet fall, farmers in Manitoba remain optimistic about the upcoming year and the potential profitability of their diversified crop portfolios.

Andrew James acknowledges the array of crop options available to Manitoban farmers, including barley, edible beans, flax, and grasses. He remains hopeful and optimistic about the future, emphasizing the resilience and adaptability of the farming community in navigating changing agricultural landscapes.
