“Mangrove Lithium Plant Pioneers Electrochemical Refining in Canada”

In Delta, British Columbia, North America’s inaugural electrochemical lithium refining plant is tucked away amidst unpretentious industrial structures that house a variety of businesses like plumbing supplies, ladders, and fitness equipment. This location might seem improbable for Canada’s endeavor to challenge China’s dominant position in lithium refining, a mineral of significant importance that has drawn attention from various quarters, including the White House and Ottawa.

During a private tour, Mangrove Lithium’s CEO and founder, Saad Dara, humorously likened the facility to a “clown building,” amidst the clamor of machinery. Starting as a solo venture in 2013, the idea evolved into a company in 2018, with the official ribbon-cutting ceremony marking a significant milestone after years of effort. The plant, now home to approximately 75 employees, has transitioned from pilot operations to a fully operational facility, with plans to commence natural-grade material production by summer.

Amidst escalating trade tensions and the escalating demand for essential metals such as copper, nickel, and lithium for electrification and defense purposes, countries are prioritizing secure supply chains. Recognizing lithium’s critical role in battery production and renewable energy transitions, the Canadian government has classified lithium as a vital mineral, emphasizing its significance. Despite Canada having mines in Manitoba and Quebec, the majority of the world’s lithium extraction and refining occurs in South America, Australia, and predominantly China.

Acknowledging China’s dominance across the six segments of the lithium market, including mining, refining, and battery assembly, Dara highlighted the country’s early investments that propelled its lead position in the industry. While Canada engages in lithium production, it lacks capabilities in EV assembly, active materials, and recycling, areas where efforts are underway to bridge the gap. The inauguration of the refining facility signals Canada’s emergence in developing a lithium supply chain that was previously absent.

Geoff McCarney, an associate professor at the University of Ottawa, underscored the significance of the plant’s opening in enhancing Canada’s resiliency in critical mineral production. Amid concerns over China’s market control and supply bottlenecks, the facility’s operation bolsters Canada’s self-sufficiency and technological advancements, underscoring the nation’s ability to secure its energy transition. The facility’s sustainable electrochemical refining technology promises a cost-competitive and environmentally-friendly alternative to conventional refining practices, setting a new standard in the industry.

With the capacity to produce battery-grade lithium for thousands of electric vehicles annually, the facility not only showcases technological advancements but also signifies a pivotal moment in Canada’s critical minerals value chain. Recognized for its role in enhancing energy security, supporting local employment, and fostering a domestic battery supply chain, the plant’s inauguration marks a significant step towards a sustainable and self-reliant lithium ecosystem in Canada.
