A man from Nova Scotia has been sentenced to 4½ years in prison for causing a fatal crash that resulted in the deaths of three individuals on a rainy evening, where he was driving at a speed double the legal limit. The sentencing recommendation was agreed upon by both the Crown and defense and was approved by Nova Scotia Supreme Court Justice Joshua Arnold.
In addition to the prison term, Tyler Strong received a five-year driving ban and a ten-year prohibition from owning firearms after serving his sentence. He admitted guilt to three charges of dangerous driving causing death and two charges of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.
The incident occurred when Strong, driving a rental Volkswagen Golf, was traveling towards Amherst on Highway 2 at 10 p.m. on October 21, 2023. Despite the posted speed limit of 70 km/h on the two-lane highway, Strong overtook another vehicle, reaching a speed of 168 km/h and collided with a Mitsubishi crossover making a left turn onto an on-ramp for Highway 104. At the time of the collision, Strong was estimated to be traveling at 149 km/h.
Tragically, three out of four occupants in the Mitsubishi lost their lives, while the fourth suffered severe injuries, including a broken femur and nerve damage. Strong’s girlfriend, who was a passenger in his vehicle, sustained serious injuries, such as a collapsed lung, significant bowel loss, and multiple broken ribs.
Justice Arnold, in accepting the sentencing recommendation, acknowledged Strong’s challenging background and his efforts to overcome adversities. Despite the absence of a direct mention of the “sad life principle” by counsel, Arnold considered Strong’s genuine interest in rehabilitation following his troubled upbringing.
The pre-sentence report shed light on Strong’s difficult childhood marked by parental substance abuse and neglect. Strong, who cut ties with his parents several years ago, found stability and support after moving out at 18 and securing a job at a poultry farm.
Family members of the victims expressed profound grief and trauma in their impact statements, highlighting the devastating impact of Strong’s actions on their lives. Arnold mentioned that Strong acknowledges the families’ resentment towards him and expressed hope that taking responsibility for his actions would offer some solace to the affected parties.
