“Macron Defends Europe Against Trump’s Greenland Ultimatum”

French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized Europe’s resolve not to yield to threats or intimidation, particularly in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent ultimatum regarding Greenland. While other European leaders have opted for a more restrained approach to prevent further escalation, Macron took a more assertive stance.

Macron declared at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that France and Europe would not passively submit to the dominance of the powerful but would uphold their sovereignty and adherence to the rule of law. He warned against the trend towards a lawless global order and suggested that the EU might retaliate with significant trade penalties if necessary.

“We prioritize respect over coercion and uphold the rule of law over aggression,” Macron stated. He delivered this message while sporting aviator sunglasses, citing a need to protect his eyes due to a medical condition.

The rift between Macron and Trump escalated after Trump’s threats of hefty tariffs on French wine and champagne and the disclosure of private messages between the two leaders. Macron condemned the use of tariffs as a tool for territorial control, labeling it as unacceptable leverage against sovereignty.

In response to the escalating tensions, EU leaders plan to convene for an emergency summit regarding Greenland. The EU could impose tariffs on U.S. goods amounting to 93 billion euros as early as February 6, a move intended to counter Washington’s aggressive trade tactics.

Macron advocated for the EU to consider deploying its Anti-Coercion Instrument, also known as the “trade bazooka,” to restrict U.S. access to public tenders and tech services. The strained relationship between the U.S. and Europe has been further exacerbated by Trump’s push to assert dominance over Greenland and his displeasure with France’s reluctance to join a proposed international organization under his leadership.

Despite the tensions, Macron clarified that he had no intention of altering his schedule to accommodate a meeting with Trump in Davos. The relationship between Macron and Trump has been marked by fluctuations, with Macron standing firm on democratic principles, which some view as the reason behind Trump’s targeting of the French president.

As Macron’s term approaches its end in mid-2027, his interactions with Trump continue to reflect a mix of diplomacy and confrontation, with Macron’s allies attributing Trump’s focus on France to Macron’s defense of democratic values.
