IOC President Warns of Unsettling Olympic Program Changes

The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Kirsty Coventry, has warned that upcoming changes to the Olympic program may be unsettling for some stakeholders.

Speaking before her first Olympic Games as the first female leader in the IOC’s 130-year history, Coventry highlighted the central theme of her presidency.

Last June, Coventry initiated a comprehensive review of over 450 medal events across 40 sports federations that are part of the Summer and Winter Games.

“We must be transparent about what works and, importantly, what does not,” Coventry emphasized during the International Olympic Committee’s annual meeting preceding the Milan Cortina Olympics opening this Friday.

“This requires us to reevaluate our sports, disciplines, and events to ensure that we adapt to the present times,” Coventry stated. “We will encounter tough decisions and discussions – this is an integral part of the process of change.”

Acknowledging that these conversations may be uncomfortable but necessary for the enduring strength of the Games, Coventry stressed the importance of evolving to resonate with younger audiences.

The inclusion of urban sports like skateboarding and 3-on-3 basketball in recent years, along with breakdancing’s debut in Paris, exemplifies the efforts to engage and inspire younger generations, according to Coventry.

Coventry’s call for “balancing tradition and innovation” may pose challenges for sports with a long Olympic history, such as modern pentathlon, as they navigate their future in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

While acknowledging the success of Paris, Coventry emphasized the necessity of continual progress rather than resting on past achievements.

The outcomes of the Olympic program review, part of Coventry’s “Fit For The Future” agenda, will be disclosed later this year.

More sports, less politics

Another key aspect of Coventry’s presidency is a renewed emphasis on sports over political involvement, despite her previous governmental role as Zimbabwe’s sports minister.

In contrast to her predecessor, Thomas Bach, who embraced political engagement during his tenure, Coventry reiterated the IOC’s primary focus on sports and minimized involvement in political affairs.

Coventry’s focus on sports was evident as she underlined the importance of sports as the core priority of the IOC, emphasizing the organization’s dedication to the sporting realm.

Anticipation surrounds Coventry’s upcoming meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump as the LA Summer Games draw near.
