Governor General Mary Simon has unveiled a list of 80 new appointments to the Order of Canada, which includes individuals such as Olympians, journalists, Indigenous leaders, and doctors. The appointments consist of six new companions, 15 officers, and 59 members, with six promotions within the Order of Canada and one honorary appointment.
Expressing the importance of the Order of Canada, the Governor General emphasized that each appointment not only recognizes the talent and dedication of individuals but also acknowledges the positive impact they have had on countless lives through their work and contributions.
Among the notable appointees is Andre De Grasse, a seven-time Olympic medalist in sprinting, who has now been named a member of the order for his philanthropic endeavors with Canadian youth. Similarly, Olympic gymnast Ellie Black, a four-time Olympian and world all-around silver medalist, has also been appointed a member of the order for her achievements and positive influence in the sports arena.
Furthermore, several distinguished individuals have been honored with the highest honor of companion of the Order of Canada. Former Supreme Court Justice Michael Moldaver and thoracic surgeon Shaf Keshavjee are among those who have received this prestigious recognition for their outstanding contributions to Canada’s justice system and advancements in thoracic surgery, respectively.
Additionally, Canadian wine pioneer Donald Triggs, journalists, TV personalities, and advocates for Indigenous language and culture have all been recognized for their significant contributions to Canadian arts, culture, and society. The appointments aim to celebrate and inspire individuals who have made a lasting impact on their communities and the country as a whole.
