Rising talent Gabriel Diallo will lead Canada’s Davis Cup team in their upcoming qualifier against Brazil, scheduled to take place at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver next month. Diallo, ranked 40th globally and hailing from Montreal, will be accompanied by Liam Draxl from Newmarket, Ont., Alexis Galarneau from Laval, Que., Nicolas Arsenault from Richmond Hill, Ont., and Cleeve Harper from Calgary, according to a recent announcement by Tennis Canada.
The Davis Cup first-round clash is slated for February 6-7 at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre. Diallo, set to make his 10th consecutive Davis Cup appearance, achieved a breakthrough in 2024 by entering the top 100 in the ATP Tour rankings and secured his first ATP Tour title at last year’s Libema Open.
The outcome of the upcoming tie will decide the team advancing to the second qualifying round in September. The top seven teams from that round will join the defending champion Italy in the Davis Cup Final 8 in November. The Canada-Brazil match, played in a best-of-five format, will kick off with two singles matches, followed by a doubles match and two more singles matches on the following day.
Canadian captain Frank Dancevic expressed enthusiasm about the strong team selected for the Davis Cup tie, highlighting the team’s determination to excel after missing out on the final stage last year. The squad, having clinched the Davis Cup in 2022, secured their place in the first qualifying round by defeating Israel 4-0 in a World Group I tie in Halifax last September.
Draxl currently holds the 132nd spot in the latest singles rankings, with Galarneau at 213th and Arsenault at 501st. Harper is ranked 94th in doubles. Diallo’s victory over Zizou Bergs of Belgium at the Libema Open in June 2025 marked his inaugural ATP Tour title win, showcasing his promising career trajectory.
