“G7 Condemns Iran for Transnational Repression Tactics”

The G7 nations have strongly criticized Iran for its recent involvement in transnational repression and attacks on political dissidents in various countries. The condemnation came in a joint statement released by the G7 Rapid Response Mechanism, a group aimed at countering foreign interference. The statement, endorsed by Canada, the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the European Union, and the United Kingdom, expressed concern over Iran’s transnational repression tactics, including attempted assassinations, kidnappings, and harassment of political opponents abroad. The G7 also denounced Iran’s efforts to obtain and expose personal information of journalists, as well as actions aimed at sowing division in societies and intimidating Jewish communities.

According to Global Affairs Canada, the G7 Rapid Response Mechanism identified a cyber operation orchestrated by the Handala Hack Team, a group linked to Iran, targeting five international journalists, one of whom is based in Canada. The operation, which involved the dissemination of hacked materials, such as government IDs and sensitive content, began on July 8 and was subsequently amplified on various social media platforms and Iranian news websites.

Furthermore, Australia and New Zealand have also condemned Iran for its aggressive actions. Australia took a decisive step by expelling the Iranian ambassador and three diplomats in response to attacks on the Jewish community attributed to Iran. New Zealand supported Australia’s stance by denouncing Iran’s behavior.

Earlier this year, Iran was singled out in Canada’s public inquiry into foreign interference for engaging in transnational repression, particularly targeting Canadian residents of Iranian descent. Justice Marie-Josée Hogue, in the inquiry’s final report, highlighted Iran’s activities aimed at monitoring, influencing, and intimidating the Iranian diaspora community in Canada to stifle dissent and criticism.

Despite these developments, Iran’s Foreign Ministry has yet to respond to the G7 statement.
