The national women’s hockey team of Finland had to call off their practice session on Wednesday due to a stomach bug that affected at least four players, as confirmed by a team spokesperson to The Associated Press.
Henna Malmberg stated that they are dealing with a challenging situation just a day before their match against defending champions Canada at the Milan-Cortina Olympics in Italy.
Despite the setback, the game is still on schedule, and team officials are updating the International Ice Hockey Federation about the circumstances. Finland is set to play against the United States on Saturday after a rest day on Friday.
According to Finland’s national public broadcaster Yle, four players encountered stomach issues overnight, likely due to a norovirus. The affected players have been isolated in their rooms for the day.
Having won four Olympic bronze medals, including one at the 2022 Beijing Games, Finland is a strong contender in women’s hockey. They have also secured bronze in the last two women’s world championships.
