A man armed with a rifle, who crashed into a large synagogue in Michigan, is believed to have carried out the attack after losing four family members in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon. The attacker, identified as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41-year-old U.S. citizen originally from Lebanon, was fatally shot by security forces after driving his vehicle into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township near Detroit. The incident, described by the FBI as a violent act targeting the Jewish community, took place at one of the nation’s largest Reform synagogues.
Fortunately, no staff, teachers, or the 140 children at the synagogue’s early childhood center were harmed during the attack. Ghazali immigrated to the U.S. in 2011 and obtained citizenship in 2016. The Israeli airstrike that led to the loss of four lives in Lebanon’s Mashgharah town occurred on March 5, with Ghazali’s two brothers and niece and nephew among the victims.
Following the airstrike, tensions have escalated in the region due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed militant group. The tragic incident in Lebanon resulted in the death of Ghazali’s family members, including a well-known soccer coach and a school bus driver.
The attack at Temple Israel prompted swift response from law enforcement, with one security officer sustaining injuries but avoiding life-threatening harm. The synagogue’s director of strategic development, Cassi Cohen, recounted the chaotic moments during the crash, emphasizing the quick actions taken to ensure the safety of children and staff present.
In a show of solidarity, Rabbi Arianna Gordon expressed gratitude to the security team, law enforcement, and teachers for their efforts in safely evacuating the children and reuniting them with their families. The incident underscores the heightened security concerns faced by synagogues worldwide, particularly in light of recent violent events targeting Jewish communities.
President Donald Trump condemned the attack, and Steven Ingber of the Jewish Federation of Detroit expressed a somber acknowledgment of the prevalent threats faced by the community. This unfortunate incident marks the second attack on a place of worship in Michigan within a year, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and security measures to protect religious institutions in the region. Oaklahoma County, with a significant Jewish population, remains on high alert following the violent episode at Temple Israel.
