This week, we explore the concept of ‘thrutopian’ narratives and their potential to envision a better climate future. One such story is Sanjana Sekhar’s short tale, “Cabbage Koora: A Prognostic Autobiography,” featured in Grist’s climate fiction collection. Sekhar’s narrative falls under the ‘thrutopia’ genre, offering a glimpse of life beyond the climate crisis, emphasizing resilience and collective prosperity.
In a ‘thrutopian’ world set in 2077 Los Angeles, sustainability prevails as residents adapt to a water-scarce environment. Sekhar’s story highlights an Indian American family navigating a transformed society through technology and community resilience while preserving cultural heritage.
The term ‘thrutopia’ was coined by Rupert Read, underscoring the need to move beyond conventional utopian and dystopian narratives concerning climate change. Dystopian tales evoke feelings of helplessness, while utopias may not resonate with all audiences. ‘Thrutopian’ stories like Sekhar’s aim to inspire collective action and adaptation amid challenges.
Examples of earlier ‘thrutopian’ works include Octavia Butler’s “Parable of the Sower,” emphasizing empathy and community resilience in a climate-altered California. Additionally, the novel “Everything For Everyone: An Oral History of the New York Commune” envisions a sustainable society post-climate collapse, emphasizing collective action and innovative governance.
The ‘thrutopia’ genre extends beyond literature, with initiatives like Climate Spring in the UK supporting climate-focused storytelling in various media. Films like “Tuk Tuk” envision a ‘solarpunk’ future, inspiring audiences to imagine alternative, sustainable realities.
Despite challenges, quality climate narratives have the power to inspire real-world change. By portraying aspirational futures, ‘thrutopian’ stories can influence societal attitudes and drive innovation towards a more sustainable world.
